    • Drs. Ricky Bluthenthal and Chanita Hughes Halbert have been appointed as the new interim chair and interim executive vice chair of the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences.

    • Congratulations to Dr Ite Offringa who received a 2024 Mentoring Award for Faculty Mentoring Graduate Students.
    • Dr. Hossein Jadvar delivered the Distinguished Alumnus lecture entitled “Prostate Cancer Theranostic: Beyond PSMA” during the Harvard Medical School Massachusetts General Hosptial’s Department of Radiology Hampton Symposium earlier this year.

New Grants

    • Dr. Evanthia Roussos Torres, co-leader of the Tumor Immunology and Microenvironment Program, received funding from the National Cancer Institute to lead a complementary, multidisciplinary research team to address interdisciplinary research questions at the nexus of cancer health disparities and cancer immunology
    • Dr. Oliver Bell, member of the USC Norris Epigenetic Regulation in Cancer Program, received a major grant from the National Cancer Institute to identify small molecules that can specifically inhibit PRC1.
    • Dr. Jennifer Tsui, Director for Cancer Care Delivery Research and Implementation Science and co-leader of the Cancer Control Research Program at USC Norris, and USC Norris member Dr. Charite Ricker  were selected as two of the USC-DHS Safety Net Innovation Awardees.

New Grants, Scientific Advances and Discoveries

    • Dr. Dechen Lin, member of the USC Norris Translational and Clinical Sciences program, who received a major grant from the National Cancer Institute to investigate whether problems with Platelet Activating Factor (PTAF) and free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism, influenced by unusual interactions involving a specific gene regulator called HNF4A, contribute to abnormal cell growth and the early stages of cancer development in the cells lining the area where the esophagus meets the stomach.

New Grants 

  • USC Norris members Drs. Ite Offringa and Nicholas Mancuso received an Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award (R21) from the National Institutes of Health.
  • Dr. Dechen Lin, member of the USC Norris Epigenetic Regulation in Cancer Program, was awarded a major grant by the National Cancer Institute, to focus on the crosstalk between cancer metabolism and epigenetic regulation and study the primary forces transforming normal oral cells into head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) using advanced organoid technology and mouse models.
  • Dr. Kai Chen, member of the USC Norris Translational and Clinical Sciences program, was recently awarded R01 funding from the National Cancer Institute to spearhead research on advancing cancer cell proliferation PET imaging through droplet radiochemistry technology.
