Patient Education and Community Outreach Center
The Patient Education and Community Outreach Center (PEOC) is a state-of-the-art facility with print and electronic cancer education and resource materials devoted to patients, their families and community members seeking information on cancer. The center also provides outreach activities and conducts informational programs relevant to the communities it serves.
Community Outreach Services:
The PEOC partners with organizations to disseminate cancer information or implement cancer education programs to reduce one’s risk for developing cancer.
Clinical Trials Education
The PEOC conducts educational programs to increase awareness and participation in cancer clinical trials
Evidence-Based Cancer Control Programs
PEOC increases access to and use evidence-based programs to prevent and control cancer in communities most affected through training and technical assistance.
PEOC disseminates data from Cancer Surveillance Program to help organizations identify areas and populations to better target for their cancer education programs.
PEOC supports the development of local cancer prevention and control coalitions and help sustain education and research infrastructure, especially for communities most in need.
Examples of community activities include:
Provided maps to 50 L.A. County community-organizations with information on areas/populations most affected by cancers, using data from the Los Angeles County Cancer Surveillance Program.
Evaluated a colorectal cancer education program attended by 250 African American community “gate-keepers” organized in collaboration with the Greater Los Angeles Unit of the American Cancer Society.
Disseminated culturally appropriate cancer information on breast, colorectal and ovarian cancer to 60 South Asian community leaders representing underserved community members.
Co-Sponsored a “Recommendation to Practice” Summit for 125 representatives of organizations to encourage use of evidence in their advocacy efforts to improve breast cancer screening rates and outcomes among California’s uninsured women.
Conducted a series of 3 trainings in collaboration with NCI’s Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network at UCLA for 20-45 community-based organizations on using evidence-based cancer prevention and control programs in their communities.
Partnered with National Cancer Institute funded Weaving an Islander Network for Cancer Awareness Research and Training (WINCART) to develop a “Cancer 101” curriculum for use in 70 churches by local Samoan community leaders to increase the community’s knowledge.
Collaborated with the Los Angeles County Affiliate of Komen for the Cure to conduct a community needs assessment which identified areas and populations for their grant-making priorities.
Participated in The California Endowment’s Healthy Communities Initiatives resulting in the development of 10 year community action/advocacy plans for South Los Angeles and Boyle Heights which are disproportionately affected by cancer.
